Daniel Dease - Photographer
Once upon a time, in Brooklyn during the late 70s, on the Pratt Institute campus, I reflected on my place in the fashion world and my journey as a designer establishing his own House.
I was fortunate to have my college friend Robert (Walker), whose mind was on branding before it was a thing-thing. He was always buzzing with ideas on how to promote the SHAKA KING MENSWEAR brand through street teams and guerrilla marketing. Along with my college beastie Ross (aka RossGRoss), they both inspired and compelled me to sit down, consider my options and develop a strategic for my next steps.
My college bestie & friend + muse/photographer, Karen Pugh, whose inspiration, lighting, and vision shape the SKM visual aesthetic from the late 70s through the 80s.
Once I met Danny (Daniel Dease). Together with his camera, his ability to capture the SKM aesthetic, and his keen eye for subjects and lighting, we formed a long-lasting relationship (filled with many hearty laughs...) that produced unforgettable SKM images from the mid-80s through the 90s.
Shout out to the SKM Trailblazers: Greg Ross (R.I.P.), Karen Pugh, Robert Walker (R.I.P.), and Geoffrey Nelson (R.I.P.). I am because you believed I could.
